Bird Watch around Orleton - Results from Spring 2007

Can you help? Please take notes of all the birds you see in your garden from now until March next year. Note the date if something unusual is seen and write a short comment about it. Then send this all in by email before April next year. We will then start our Spring Watch again.

Blackbird April Orleton Memorial gardens Old Bakery St George's Crescent Little Overton Nesting in the back hedge between the gardens and 2, Millbrook Way . nest there regularly Feeding in the garden Feeding in the garden Feeding in the garden. Also males seen fighting in May. Male bird with white feathers seen in the winter months and then again in May and into the summer.
Blue Tit April Little Overton Nests in 2 nest boxes under the eves of the house. New box put up after woodland was cut down, on 17th April. Birds made a nest in it straight away but were then disturbed by cats and nest box dislodged.
Great Tits and others in the family April Lane between Manor and old Farm Shop Lots seen in the lane after the woodland was cut down. They stayed around in the lane for quite a few days after that.
Bullfinch April Bank Cottage Seen on the bird table. Not seen before at this time.
Buzzard April Woodland behind the shop There has been a nest here for the last 4 years. They raised at least one chick every year.
Canada Geese Spring The Grange Pair nested on the lake and hatched 5 young but they all vanished a couple of weeks later
Duck Spring The Grange Pair nested on the lake and hatched 5 ducklings but they all vanish at the same time as the Geese.
Goldfinches April Lane between the Manor and the old Farm Shop Tunnel Lane St George's Crescent Flock seen straight after the woodland cut down and scrub land flattened. Never seen here before. Flock seen in mid April and never seen here before Seen feeding at the bird table and never seen here before
Goldcrest April Old Bakery Nested in April, never seen here before, one fledgling died.
Greater Spotted Woodpecker Spring Little Overton Still water Cottage Old Bakery Adults and then family seen feeding on nuts. A regular visitor Parents and one juvenile visited bird table
Green Woodpecker Spring Mid April Early August Mid August The Grange Bank Cottages Little Overton Still Water Cottage Many sightings Seen in garden but never seen before Seen in garden eating the flying ants. Never seen here before. Juvenile feeding in garden and then a few days later the adult there as well. Never seen before.
Heron Spring Marsh and surrounding area Seen flying over in late spring, early summer as normal
House Sparrow March St George's Crescent Old Dairy Little Overton Seen on bird table Seen feeding in garden Using a nesting box made for blue tits by the eves of the house -they leave box at the end of April- seem to start another brood.
Jackdoor Spring Ashley Moor Farm Nested in old Oak tree by lane , chasing out the Little Owls, but then the tree was damaged by high winds and the pair left.
Kingfisher Late July Mid August Seen over Manor grounds Still Water Cottage Just a flash Seen feeding in the pond. Never seen here before
Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Spring Croft End The Grange Feeding on peanuts
Little Owl Spring Ashley Moor farm Usually nests in an Old Oak in the field by the lane but this year was chased out by Jackdoors
Marsh Tit 2006 On the Marsh at the Manor Not seen at all this year although seen in previous years
Magpie Spring April Little Overton Tunnel Lane Parents seen around a lot. They raised 3 young this year. Eating hen eggs which was never done before. Seen eating birds eggs when the woodland was cut down
Robin April nesting Little Overton Still Water Cottage St George's Crescent Seen nesting in a dense conifer early April – feeding young from end of month. Parents come to door for food at regular times. Juvenile joins feeding sessions at the end of May 4 young reared in small Horse Chestnut tree
Snipe Spring On the Marsh Not seen at all this year although seen and heard in previous years
Swan Spring The Manor Not seen this year although used to be regular visitors
Tawny Owl Spring Still Water Cottage Woodland behind the shop Seen taking a vole off the patio Heard during August evenings
Thrush Spring St George's Crescent Seen feeding in the garden and smashing snail shells.
Willow Warbler Spring Little Overton Not seen at all this year
