Bird Watch around Orleton
To see Nick Smith's report on behalf of the Herefordshire Ornithological Society 2009, click here.
Following successful BIRD WATCH years in Orleton we would like to try and do another
this year. Everyone is most welcome to join us. Just make a list of birds you see
nesting in your garden and send the results to barbaramark@hotmail.co.uk. Name it
bird watch please.
Could we suggest that, since most of the birds are now feeding their young, everyone
makes a list of nesting birds on 6th May, or a date close to that.
Thank you so very much for taking part.
Signs of a Changing Earth: excerpts from a RSPC publication
Birds are a good thermometer of the health of the environment. The government studies
farm land birds every year which is used as an official measure of Britain's environmental
quality.
We are all interconnected and when bird populations are in trouble, it is a sign
that the Earth's ecosystems are also under threat. Across the World the 2008 assessments
found that one in eight of the bird species are now under threat of extinction.
Researchers predict that climate change could cause the extinction of up to one
million species world wide by 2050. European birds are moving northeast and the
RSPB, and other organisations, are trying to make sure there are suitable habitats
for them as they move to.
