Reiki (pronounced ray-key)

Reiki is a natural hands on healing system which originated in Japan. Meaning "universal life energy", Reiki uses the natural energy which is around and within all living things. Reiki allows the client's body to direct healing energy to its own areas of need, the practitioner is merely a channel.

There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed. The treatment works on harmonising both mind and body thereby restoring the natural balance.

History of Reiki

Fired by a burning question, Dr Mikao Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today, Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.

Treatment

A Reiki treatment consists of the recipient lying on a couch and simply relaxing. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given sitting up. It is important for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible.

There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms.

A full treatment usually lasts 1 – 1½ hours with each position held for several minutes. The treatment is often experienced as a deeply comforting warmth, a tingling, coolness or a sense of well-being treating the cause, rather than the symptoms, of illness.

With a background in Early Years education, I have seen first hand the pressures and stresses of modern life. There seldom seems enough time to consider our well-being and we often wait until our health begins to suffer before taking positive action. I discovered Reiki in 1994 when my mother was treated whilst recovering from breast cancer. The results were amazing and it was quite hard to believe how powerful this healing energy can be. It was when I was looking for alternative treatments to help my son's asthma that Reiki found it's way to me once again and in August 2005, I was presented with the opportunity to train with Reiki Master, Milly Cain. I would like to share this journey by offering the healing support that Reiki can bring.
